Mandre – An idyllic coastal gem on Pag
Located on the quiet west coast of the island of Pag in northern Dalmatia, Mandre offers a family-friendly alternative to the island’s busier tourist centres. With its authentic charm, crystal-clear sea and rich gastronomic heritage, the town is the perfect destination for those seeking peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings.

Description of Mandre

Mandre is a picturesque coastal town situated in a sheltered bay overlooking the islands of Silba, Olib, Maun and Škrda. The resort stretches along 3 kilometres of clear pebble beaches and rocky coves fringed by pine trees. It is ideal for travellers looking to rent a self-catering holiday apartment, book a luxury villa with a pool or secure a holiday home by the sea. The main harbour has a coastal promenade lined with seafood konobas (traditional taverns), ice cream parlours and relaxed beach bars.

History and origins

Unlike many of the old Dalmatian towns, modern Mandre is relatively young. Until the mid-20th century, it was just a small fishing port with a few stone houses used by the agricultural inhabitants of the inland Kolan. As tourism grew in Croatia in the late 1960s, locals built coastal holiday homes, private apartments and villas by the sea to accommodate visitors. Despite this growth, Mandre retains its historical roots as an authentic Mediterranean fishing village.

Nature around Mandre

Mandre's surroundings showcase Pag's dramatic contrast between rugged, moon-like limestone landscapes and lush Mediterranean flora. The nature around the town offers unique experiences for any nature lover:

Drywalls (Suhozid)

Kilometers of historic, hand-stacked stone walls crisscross the coastline, testifying to centuries of traditional farming and grazing culture on the island.

Kolanjsko Blato

A nearby protected ornithological wetland is an obvious and ideal excursion destination for birdwatching and peaceful walks.

Crystal clear water

The sea here is exceptionally clear, which has among other things given the popular Mala Mandra beach Blue Flag status for clean water quality.

Activities and experiences

Whether you are looking for relaxation by the water or an active holiday, Mandre and the surrounding countryside have plenty to offer:

Coastal promenade walks: Take a stroll along the long waterfront that connects the lively harbor with quiet and undisturbed bays like Girenica.

Water sports and boat trips: Rent pedalos or kayaks locally, or book an organized boat trip out to the uninhabited islands of Maun and Škrda.

Cycling and hiking: Explore the marked trails that wind through the Kolanjsko Polje (Kolan Field) up to Sv. Vid, the highest peak on the island of Pag, from which there is a magnificent view of the entire archipelago.

Typical food and gastronomy

Mandre is located in the municipality of Kolan, known as the gastronomic heart of Pag. The area offers unique raw materials and culinary experiences:

Paški Sir (Pag Cheese)

The world-famous, hard sheep's milk cheese aged with local herbs and aromatic oils, which give it its unique and intense flavor.

Pag Lamb (Paška Janjetina)

Tender and tasty lamb, naturally seasoned by grazing on wild sage and sea salt dust, which is carried over the island by the strong Bura wind.

Fresh seafood

Enjoy delicacies such as black risotto, octopus cooked under a peka (traditional baking dish), and sea-fresh grilled fish drizzled with local, cold-pressed olive oil.

Festivals and events

Throughout the summer and year, several traditional events are held where you can experience local culture up close:

Sea Festival (Fešta od Spize): Held in the summer in Mandre with live klapa (a cappella) music, fresh grilled sardines and mussels à la buzara served on the idyllic waterfront.

Lamb Festival: Held in June and celebrates the island's famous lamb with traditional lamb dishes and local culinary products.

Kolan Cheese Festival: Held every August in nearby Kolan, where the island's most skilled cheesemakers, honey producers and winemakers gather to showcase their best wares.
